The island of Cozumel is the largest of Mexico’s inhabited islands. It is home to roughly 70,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Mayan. At 35 miles long and 9 miles wide, Cozumel is located about 12 miles from the coast of eastern Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The island’s tropical climate can be enjoyed year-round as temperatures range from 80 – 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

In 1961, the famous Jacques Yves Cousteau introduced the world to the aquatic wonders of Cozumel. Since then, thousands of divers have explored the island’s warm, crystal clear waters. As part of the world’s second largest reef system – which originates in the Gulf of Mexico and stretches south to Honduras – Cozumel’s waters average 75 – 84 degrees Fahrenheit. It is not uncommon for divers to experience visibility of160 feet, and with strong currents averaging 3 knots, most dives start at the southern portion of the reef and easily drift to the north.

Offering more than 30 different reefs, great visibility, and warm water throughout the year, Cozumel has something special for every diver.

The original name of the island is Ah-Cuzamil-Petén; this is Maya for the island of the swallows.
